Hunger Games Quotes
Chapters 1-6 4
- My father taught me some before he was blown to bits in a mine explosion. There was nothing even to bury. I was eleven then. Five years later, I still wake up screaming for him to run (Page 5)
- Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me. But a shift has occurred since I stepped up to take Prim's place, and now it seems I have become someone precious. (Page 24)
- Now that the meal's over, I'm fighting to keep the food down. I can see Peeta's looking a little green, too. Neither of our stomachs is used to such rich fare. (Page 45)
- A warning bell goes off in my head. Don't be stupid. Peeta is planning how to kill you, I remind myself. He is luring you in to make you an easy prey. The more likable he is, the more deadly he is. (Page 72)
Chapters 7-13 4
- My heart starts to pound, I can feel my face burning. Without thinking, I pull an arrow from my quiver and send it straight at the Gamemakers' table. I hear shouts of alarm as people stumble back. the arrow skewers the apple in the pig's mouth and pins it to the wall behind it. Everyone stares at me in disbelief. (Page 102)
- Betrayal. That's the first thing I feel, which is ludicrous. For there to be betrayal, there would have to have been trust first. (Page 114)
- I almost fall out of the tree. The voice belongs to Peeta. (Page 160)
- My fingers stroke the smooth ground, sliding easily across the top. This is an okay place to die, I think.
Chapters 14-21 6
- Sick and disoriented, I'm able to form only one thought: Peeta Mellark just saved my life. (Page 194)
- "You know, they're not the only ones who can form alliances," I say. For a moment, no response. Then one of Rue's eyes edges around the trunk. "You want me for an ally?" (Page 200)
- Rue has decided to trust me wholeheartedly. I know this because as soon as the anthem finishes she snuggles up against me and falls asleep. (Page 208)
- The boy from District 1 dies before he can pull out the spear. My arrive drives deeply into the center of his neck. (Page 233)
- The news sinks in. Two tributes can win this year. If they're from the same district. Both can live. Both of us can live. Before I can stop myself, I call out Peeta's name. (Page 244)
Chapters 22-27 12
- "Peeta!" I say, trying for the special tone that my mother used only with my father. He's dozed off again, but I kiss him awake, which seems to startle him. Then he smiles as if he'd be happy to lie there gazing at me forever. He's great at this stuff. (Page 261)
- Something between a sigh and a huff of exasperation leaves my mouth. A happy story? This will require a lot more effort than the soup. (Page 268)
- His eyes widen as he realizes the truth. I clamp my hand over his mouth and nose hard, forcing him to swallow instead of spit. He tries to make himself vomit the stuff up, but it's too late, he's already losing consciousness. Even as he fades away, I can see in his eyes what I've done is unforgivable. (Page 277)

13-21 Reading Review
- Rue and Katniss' plan is to blow up the career tribute's supplies to make it harder on them during the games. Since they've grown up in a more privileged life, they rely more on food supplies than any of the other districts, revealing that they do have a weak spot even as the most vicious competitors. It ends up working, but Katniss wasn't fast enough to find Rue, and she was pierced by a spear from one of the career tributes, whom of which Katniss had killed afterwards. "No, they're not. That's the problem," I agree. And for the first time, I have a plan. A plan that isn't motivated by the need for flight and evasion. An offensive plan. "I think we're going to have to fix that, Rue." (Page 207)
- Peeta and Katniss met up after Katniss ran off blindly through the forest to find him. She remembered some tactics they learned at the training center and set out for a river, since Peeta would need water to be able to survive this long. Indeed did she find him painted like a rock down by the river, and the scenes that had happened after was of ones that looked as though she truly was worried about him. The fake romance is continued on Katniss' side, since she always thinks of the capitol's audience first before doing, but Peeta is another case. Their fake relationship blossoms, but Katniss is starting to catch feelings. "Peeta, who's been wounded, is now my ally. Whatever doubts I've had about him dissipate because if either of us took the other's life now we'd be in pariahs when we returned to District 12." (Page 247)
- Katniss drugged Peeta and ran off to get him something that will keep him alive, which meant she went to Cornicopia and had gotten almost killed by one of the career tributes that were given the 'okay' to be tortured and killed by Cato. That tribute ended up getting mauled by Thresh, who didn't want to hold any favors to Katniss who had helped Rue out in her time and need. She's successful in running away since Thresh takes Cato's bag to throw him off her trail, and is able to get the high book bag to Peeta, which had his special medicine to heal up the gash in his thigh. "Just to be sure, I place a drop on the tip of my tongue. There's no question, it's sleep syrup." (Page 276)
- Katniss is indeed starting to lower the wall between her and Peeta, and she even goes through such lengths to pull off the 'perfect couple act'. "Getting the broth into Peeta takes an hour of coaxing, begging, threatening, and yes, kissing, but finally, sip by sip, he empties the pot" (Page 262) Katniss, who couldn't even stand the sight of this boy back at the capitol, was spoon feeding him soup so that she'd get better. She doesn't stop either until he's eaten all of this food, since she kept badgering him about eating since he hasn't eaten in so long. "I spend the night half-sitting, half-lying next to Peeta, refreshing the bandage, and trying not to dwell on the fact that by teaming up with them, I've made myself far more vulnerable (Page 263) If Katniss didn't care about her partner, she would just give him soup and first aid treatment and then leave him be. Sure they were teamed up together, but if she were to try and forget that they were a team now, she might end up losing what sanity she has left from the games. Katniss needed someone like this for so long after pushing everyone away, and now she had Peeta.

Dear DOE,
It has come to our attention that the bell schedules for Moanalua High School, our current residing school, has increased rapidly over the past few years due to having to abstain from breaking the rules made by the “state laws” pertaining to how long we are required to stay in school for. As stated by the law, students are only required to be in instructional class for a minimum time of 5 ½ hours. Thus, not including recess and lunch of course. By doing this, the schools in Hawaii would be able to barely make it towards the goal, but at what price?
According to Wilson, K., & Korn, J.H., researchers from Saint Louis University, an average student can only attain an attention span during class for 10-15 minutes MAX. This test was taken on college students during lectures that ranged from 50-90 minutes, which is way more than the student’s attention span. Their research on the students’ attention lapses were all the same, and ranged from no more than 20 minutes while in their lectures. All students had any electronic that wasn’t for taking notes of for the lecture taken away and those kids that had dozed off were to be woken immediately for the research to continue.
What’s worse is that the lapses of being occupied during a lecture aren’t constant-
They were waxing-and-waning patterns. If a student took a small break for 3 minutes from the lecture, the next break of their concentration was for 6 minutes, the process continuing as the numbers continued to steadily increase over the time period. By the end of the lecture, the lapses happened every two minutes.
Katherine Bradley even states that it’s not only the failure of being able to concentrate, but also shortening the days will help contribute to the schools saving money due to less electricity being used. Shortening school days are also beneficial for students being able to participate in extracurricular activities. Students often shy away from those extracurricular activities due to not being able to juggle homework, sports, and of course the long dreadful days.
We not only think in the minds as kids, but as students that are going along the path into adulthood. What we make of our future is how we do in school, and although having more time for learning does seem to be the correct solution, it won’t make a difference if the students themselves don’t have the physical ability to absorb all of the information.
Sincerely,
Students of Moanalua High School
