Act I Questions (Part 1 & Part 2)

Part I

  1. The relationship between Macbeth and his wife is a very strained one because she's so controlling of him after finding out the prophecy the three witches said about Macbeth becoming King. The wife wants Macbeth to actually kill King Duncan, whom of which had treated Macbeth so well, and Macbeth himself is very torn about the situation.
  2. Macbeth ultimately chooses to murder Duncan after being convinced by his wife and also after hearing the prophecy. He's consumed by the curiosity and what sweetened the deal was that his wife said that if they kept their cool, they'd pull it off and nobody would know. That way he'd feel guilty, but wouldn't be punished for his crimes.
  3. Macbeth is very loyal towards King Duncan, who has been so kind to him all this time. He's torn by his greed and confused as to why the thought of killing someone so important would even cross his mind, showing his internal struggle. He's weak though, and the bad thoughts continue to run through his head before giving in to them.
  4. Just by saying this, is Macbeth concerned and unsure of his decision. Such hesitation brings room for an unclear mind and failure. I feel like that's a sort of bad premonition. He's doubting himself, and it's almost as if he's asking for something bad to happen. His wife is more sure of the plan and if anything, she should be the one to kill the king herself.
  5. I think Macbeth shouldn't try to kill the king. He's obviously not up for the task and although his wife keeps telling him to do it, he shouldn't give in to his desires because this is death we're talking about. If he was found out then he's going to have to either do something to cover it up or he'll probably die to for killing the king. He's not some sort of assassin and he's not really doing anything to double check the perfect route in order to kill the king. Without a sort of elaborated plan, the entire mission will fall apart and he'll pay the price with his life.

Part II

  1. "Just look innocent- a troubled face is always dangerous. Leave all the rest to me" (Page 31 Line 68-70)
  2. "I am resolved and will exert all my physical energy to this terrible task. Let's go, and lets fool the world by looking our best; a deceptive appearance must hide what the deceiving heart knows." (Pg 41 Lines 79-83)
  3. "Being of service and the loyalty I owe you are their own reward. Your Highness' role is to accept the duties of his loyal subjects, and our duties are to your throne and country like those of children and servants, who only do what they should be doing all they can to safeguard your well-being with love and honor." (Pg 23 Lines 22-27)
  4. "What if we should fail?" (Pg 39 Line 58)
